I had a theory

that my 56k modem was overheating, which was why my connection tended to get crappier as the night wore on. To test this, I disconnected the modem and stuck it in the fridge for ten minutes, making it nice and cool. Then I tried reconnecting and got a connection at 26,400 baud.

Man, I hate dial-up.

I guess that means it's something else. Maybe the lines to the exchange are being affected by the heat, leading to reduced line speeds. it's 10:30pm - if anything I'd have thought they'd be cooling down by now. maybe that's the problem.

Either way, I don't think I can do anything about it, which pretty much sucks.
