I've been doing a minor modification on my site design recently, and taking the opportunity to rename all the graphics directories, which has had the intended effect of flushing out all the bandwidth bandits. And when I did the DiscCon Guide on Saturday, it flushed out the one which was bugging me a few weeks back.

It looks like someone decided to use the picture of the fifth Doctor(!) for their user icon on a message board and didn't bother to make a local copy. Git. Now they have a broken image! Ahahahahahaha!

Must find a way to disable remote linking, like Tripod and so on have done.

You'd rather they just steal the images?

Yes, to be honest. most of the images on my site are just decoration and those are the ones which have been being remote linked. If someone's determined to use one of the images off my site without asking, there's little I can do to stop them and at least I can make them work to do it, and not steal my bandwidth.

I suspect that if they can't remote link, though, they just won't bother. Most of the remote linkers have been message board users who've probably stumbled across the images in a Google search, and they probably don't have web space of their own to host an image.

If you find a way, let me know. For me it'd be like finding the Loyhargil.

there's this way but I haven't tested whether it's possible with my hosting package... Also, I don't know what will happen if the person browsing has referrer reporting disabled in their browser. I will have to try it and see...

I suppose it's time for me to learn ASP just for this purpose. It's just getting worse and worse.
