ST:V: Eye of the Needle

Eye of the Needle: Voyager locates a microwormhole to the Alpha Quadrant.

It's the eye of the needle, it's the thrill of the fight!

Kim finds a microwormhole. They send in a microprobe, but it gets halfway through the hole. Then Kim reports the probe was just scanned by someone at the other end of the wormhole.

Kes observes some of the crew members are terribly rude towards the HoloDoc. She doesn't consider that this could possibly be because the HoloDoc is terribly rude towards the rest of the crew.

Kim and Torres work on using the probe as a booster to send a message through the wormhole. Kim reveals he used to call his parents at least once a week. Torres says she hasn't seen her father since she was five (doesn't that contradict the later episode where she's having trouble with the other kids?). They send a signal through, and get a reply, which Tuvok says originates from the Alpha Quadrant. Kim starts working on an audio link.

Kes visits Janeway (apparently Paris is into spinach juice. WTF?) and talks to her about how the crew treat the HoloDoc.

Kim and Torres get an audio link going, but the captain of the cargo ship doesn't believe they're in the Delta Quadrant. Apparently Star Fleet vessels are in the habit of pulling "HAY! WE'RE IN TEH DELTA QUADRANT" pranks. Tuvok says the ship they contacted was Romulan, and probably really a military ship on a secret mission.

Janeway talks to the HoloDoc about what resources he needs to make his job easier.

Kim manages to get the Romulan captain back on the line and Janeway asks him to relay messages to Star Fleet. He says he's going to try to establish a visual link. Hang on, if he can't see her, how does he know to say "good night" at the end of the call? How does he know Janeway's in her PJs?

With the video link established, the Romulan tells them that the Romulan Senate is considering passing on their messages to Star Fleet. Torres comes up with an idea to use the link to piggyback a transporter beam. Kes mentions the possibility of everyone beaming off to the HoloDoc, who points out he's integrated into sick bay and can't be downloaded.

The transporter test is successful, but the Romulan balks at transporting a person to his ship, though he says he'll arrange for a troop ship to carry them. After a bunch of successful tests, they beam the Romulan captain to Voyager. Tuvok says that he's found the reason for the phase variance in the wormhole - the other end is not only in the Alpha Quadrant, it's 20 years in the past.

The Romulan promises to pass their messages on to Star Fleet in another 20 years, and asks if they get back, that they look up him up. Tuvok unfortunately informs Janeway that the Romulan died 4 years before he could send on the messages (though it's possible he gave the messages to his daughter to send on). Meanwhile, HoloDoc starts getting some respect, and says he'd like a proper name. Dream on, pal. Teh end.
