What would Torchwood do? |
Public |

I realised today that, while Torchwood's absence during The Sound of Drums is explained (They're hunting fowl in Tibet, ISTR), it's not really explained what happened to them for the whole year Martha spent wandering the planet. I'm assuming, since there's only four of them, that they survived the Toclafane culling, and that they must have pretty much found out something was up not long after the Master's plan went down. So, poll:
What did Torchwood do during the Year of Martha?
Returned to base and bickered pointlessly about how to rescue Jack
2(2.9%)
Returned to base and shagged each other while bickering pointlessly about how to rescue Jack
51(73.9%)
Other (comment)
13(18.8%)

I think they only got as far as Marrakech before getting down to bickering and shagging. Then the Toclafane descended and Your Least Favorite Member of Torchwood was sliced and diced.

If Martha turns up at Torchwood and recognizes them but they don't know her, she met them... otherwise I bet the Toclafane got them all.

Ooohhh..I need to re-find that excellent fic I read where we find that they didn't survive that year...and that even after the 'reboot', some feel vague repercussions...heheheh...

Four super secret operatives head into the Himalayas and -
wait, that's The Champions!
(The Champions, of course, being a 60's spy riff on Lost Horizon)

I'm fairly certain they shagged like hamsters in Vegas. Less convinced they were thinking of Jack.
What puzzles me more is Jack. A year shackled up like that? Ow. With his clothes on? What gives? He didn't look at all like he'd gotten that kinky with the guards. Completely lost his touch.

I hope they at least gave him sponge baths. He's got to be a bit wiffy after all that time otherwise. :)

Interesting question. Option 3 is clearly the most likely answer. I wonder if they'll make any mention of it in the new series of Torchwood?

I picked Other. I suppose they tried to return from Tibet but didn't get to an airport before public services had broken down. A more interesting question to me, whether they made it back from Tibet or not, is: Given Torchwood's institutional attitude toward the Doctor, will they have participated in Martha's subversion of the Archangel network on the Doctor's behalf?

True, though the break-down of public services apparently didn't hinder Martha from touring the world. :)

Well, Martha travels with the Doctor, and the Doctor only takes the best. Jack, on the other hand, makes do with the luck of the draw.

(Here from who_daily, by the way.) My personal canon is that the Master found them (he laid the clues to send them to Tibet in the first place, he controls the Archangel Network, they all have mobile phones, and every mobile network on the globe is connected to the Archangel Network, it wouldn't be hard to find them, especially as disorganized as they were at the end of S1), captured them, and executed them. Publicly, and in front of Jack. Probably one at a time, whenever he felt like Jack wasn't hurting enough... It'd be as much fun for him as actually killing Jack - only problem is, he only gets to do it once for each of them. ...I need to stop talking, because I sound rather creepy.

Creepy, but that's what the Master would do. (It never occurred to me anyone might think they weren't all dead long before the end of the year-that-wasn't.)

Mmmhmmm. (Maybe it's just my friends in the fandom, and the fact that we all agree (to the extent that we've discussed it), but... yeah, I always thought they would've died pretty soon after the Toclaphane arrived.)

True, my assumption that they all survived was highly optimistic. Hopefully they might offer some explanation in Torchwood Series 2, probably more Jack angst. :)

Oh, who doesn't love Jack angst?
A large part of why I'm so fond of that theory is that it helps explain why Jack decided to go back to Torchwood instead of travelling with the Doctor, when a year ago he was more than happy to abandon them all when the TARDIS showed up in Cardiff. Seeing them all die in front of him would have driven home to him that yes, he does care about them that much, and yes, they do need him around - more than the Doctor does, much as Jack wants to be with the Doctor. Because without something like that... it's a rather large and unexplained shift in motivation for Jack, even with a year to think it over.

well my theory is pretty boring compared to most everyone here but I just assumed they were killed by the Toclafane. I do like the idea though that the Master killed them all in front of Jack. Doesn't say much about me if my favourite theory is them all being murdered does it?

Since the Master knew about Jack's team and diverted them to an errand of his choosing, I assume they were captured and executed.
Except, of course, for Ianto, who quickly discovered that the Toclafane could be shorted out by throwing really good, strong, hot coffee on them. He then went on to lead a subset of the resistance, and was second in fame only to Ms. Martha Jones. He was known to the masses not by his true name, but only his title. The Coffeemaker.

As allfireburns said, I'm under the belief they were publicly executed. With Jack right there to watch. And probably hoping they'd beg Jack to do something or say something that the Master wanted to free them. Which they wouldn't. (Well, maybe Owen. ;D) And then, you know, killing them brutally and painfully. Lots of blood. And screaming. (Of course, I hadn't thought about this until allfireburns wrote an awesome fic and we got to talking about it, but...)

The question shouldn't be what happened to Torchwood. The question should be `What happened to Sarah Jane and K9?'
