I bought a handibag today in order to send something to the JeffStoat. I noticed the pre-printed address form had "Town (write in English)" on it. Unfortunately I didn't have Wikipedia handy, and I didn't know offhand what Wanganui was in English, so I wrote it in Maori instead.

I hope the postie doesn't get too confused.

Try "Petre". I think that was the original name of the Wanganui settlement. You'll probably have as much luck getting something to Wanganui by addressing it "Petre" as I'd have in getting something to Wanaka by addressing it "Pembroke", though...
