I discovered an entirely roundabout way to turn bits of YouTube vids into icons, though my computer now hates me.

I would love to have one of the Voyager flyby sequences from that video as an icon, but fitting that into a 100x100 40kb icon isn't going to happen. Curse LJ and its entirely logical and sane limits. :)

Oh, wow. That's a nostalgia trip right there.

How did you turn those vids into gifs, then?

1/ use Clipnabber to grab the video as an MP4.
2/ use Pazera Free MP4 to AVI Converter 1.3 to convert that into an AVI.
3/ Import that into Jasc's Animation Shop 3 (which is unfortunately not free :( and experiment with frame ranges until you find the segment you're looking for.

Then you can save it as an animated GIF.

I found that AS3 tended to have problems if I loaded more than around 500 frames in at once, so it was really trial and error trying to find the section I wanted. Obviously your mileage will vary depending on your computer specs, the resolution of the video and so on. :)
