And I was thinking the other day NZ hasn't had a disaster recently

Because, you know, other countries have been having tsunamis and earthquakes and what have you, but we didn't have one here... until now.

State of emergency after 7.1 quake hits Christchurch

No reports of deaths yet, fortunately. I have a cousin who lives down there, but she's been heard from.
